The environmental impulse in American literature and how it counters the materialistic “American Dream” will be discussed. The focus will be on authors Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Steinbeck, Peter Matthiessen, and contemporary African-American writer, Jesmyn Ward. These authors will be studied through the “most subversive literary theory”: eco-criticism.
